Solomons Government House raises doubt about August 4th election date

2:22 pm on 28 May 2010

Government House in Solomon Islands says it considers the revelation of August the 4th as the date of the general election as misguided and invalid.

The date was given by the prime minister, Derek Sikua, in recent meetings with the public.

A new 50-seat assembly for a four-year term has to be chosen by late August after the last parliament rose last month.

According to the Solomon Times, Government House says the power to announce the date rests with the Governor General but he has so far not said when polling will go ahead.

It is now not immediately clear if the date of August the 4th, given by Dr Sikua, is wrong.
