Vanuatu parliament expected to deal with coroner's report on police

1:45 pm on 2 June 2010

A controversial Coroner's Report that detailed faults in the Vanuatu police and its paramilitary wing, the Vanuatu Mobile Force, may be tabled in Parliament tomorrow.

The report, which was released in March, called for major reforms within the police services and the prosecution of those responsible for the death of a prisoner in custody.

The watchdog group Transparency International in Vanuatu has been pushing for action and has welcomed recent developments.

The president of TI, Marie Noelle Ferrieux Patterson, says firstly, police have announced they will pursue good governance, while there are now reports that MPs will get to publicly debate the report.

"We understand that after meetings with Ministers and Speaker that the tabling of that Coroner's Report has been accepted and it might be tabled tomorrow morning. So we will follow that very carefully as there should be a motion after that to have a debate about it. So that would be the first time that all the politicians are talking about it, and it is very welcome."
