The leader of the Fiji Labour Party says there's a perception the interim prime minister's claim that people want elections deferred beyond 2014 is paving the way to delay elections beyond that date.
Last week, Commodore Frank Bainimarama said the people of Fiji were happy with the regime's policies and were urging him to delay his election plans.
But the Labour Party says the Commodore should hold a national referendum to back up his claims, as the feedback it's received is quite different.
The party's leader Mahendra Chaudhry says people are suffering economically and want a return to normality.
Mr Chaudhry says in some circles the prime minister's statement is being seen as preparing the ground for a further postponement of elections.
"Well that's the general perception here, a lot of our people and I believe in international circles too, they've been rather skeptical about whether we will have an election in 2014."
Mahendra Chaudhry says there is support for early elections and for inclusive political dialogue.
