The mayor of Mare Island in New Caledonia's Loyalty group has been researching renewable energy options in Vanuatu to reduce the island's reliance on diesel.
Last week, Basile Citre led a delegation to look over a partly coconut fuelled power station in Port Vila, run by the utility UNELCO.
They also checked out a windmill and UNELCO's plantation of jatropha, a plant grown specifically for use as biofuel.
The delegation visited a second power station in Malakula which is 100 percent reliant on coconut oil.
Our correspondent says Mr Citre was interested in the way this type of generation fostered economic activity in the villages.
