Law enforcement agencies in Solomon Islands receive security training

7:33 am on 8 June 2010

Law enforcement agencies in Solomon Islands last week received specialist security training from a US expert.

The State Department's James Ink provided training to cadets at the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force Academy and staff of the Solomon Islands Customs and Immigration units.

He discussed immigration and civil aviation security services and drew comparisons with what happens in the U.S. Customs and Immigration services.

The assistant regional security officer at the U.S. Embassy, Lee Gitschier says the Solomon's is vulnerable to transnational crime.

He says it's a source, transshipment point and destination country for contraband.

The U.S. Embassy is planning to invite Mr Ink to return to conduct additional workshops and seminars, particularly on human trafficking.
