A documentary about the indigenous people of Hawai'i has been honoured at New Zealand's Wairoa Maori Film Festival.

Catherine Bauknight's documentary, Hawaii: A Voice For Sovereignty, has been recognised for raising awareness about the struggle for indigenous and human rights.

The film has already won several awards around the world.

Catherine Bauknight says the award is a great tribute to the people who let her tell their stories.

"Our award from the Maori Film festival is the Mana Warrior. That I believe is because the mana of the people, it was so present and they were so honest and so pure about telling their story for the first time after holding it back for generations."

Hawaii A Voice For Sovereignty will now screen throughout New Zealand touring with the Maori Film Festival.
