And France's highest court of appeal is this week due to review the conviction in Tahiti of French Polynesia's veteran politician, Gaston Flosse, for corruption.
This comes after his lawyers last week successfully argued that the sentence banning him for five years from holding office was not constitutional.
While lodging the appeal in Paris, his lawyers had also gone to the French constitutional court which has now found that the clause used to strip him of his office was too broad.
Among those sitting on the constitutional court panel was Mr Flosse's long-time associate and former French president, Jacques Chirac, who himself has been indicted on corruption charges since leaving political office.
Mr Flosse's conviction in Papeete last year relates to the misuse of public funds following the 2004 general election night when he lost power.
