The Electoral Commission in Solomon Islands is advising intending candidates for the upcoming national election to prepare themselves for the opening of the nomination period.

The chief electoral officer, Polycarp Haununu, says after the official proclamation of the election date by the Governor General, candidates have just two weeks to complete nomination forms and submit a nomination fee.

He says the proclamation date marks the start of the official legal election timetable.

While the election date is yet to be officially announced, the caretaker Prime Minister Derek Sikua reportedly stated it will be August 4.

From tomorrow more than 50 returning officers and their assistants are being trained across the country.
