Tonga palace extension details released

More details have been released about planned extensions at the Royal Palace in Tonga's capital, Nuku'alofa.

A media release from the Office of the Lord Chamberlain says there'll be two new wings added to allow for space for official functions separate from King George Tupou the 5th's private quarters.

The Privy Council is to resume meeting in the old Privy Council Chambers and allow the Cabinet Chambers to be used exclusively by the Government, following the elections under a more democratic system in November.

Our correspondent understands that in the latest budget about five million US dollars has been allocated for the extensions.

The pro-democracy MP Akilisi Pohiva has faced a parliamentary disciplinary committee for suggesting the King ordered the changes.

The press release states that the Lord Chamberlain is commanded to announce the new extensions.
