Fiji rugby boss in custody over disaster rumours

3:07 pm on 22 June 2010

Police in Fiji are reported to have taken into custody the chairman of the Fiji Rugby Union, Bill Gavoka, over rumours that the nation will be hit by a disaster tomorrow.

Spreading rumours is an offence under Fiji's military emergency decrees

The Fiji Broadcasting Corporation says Mr Gavoka, who is a former Fiji Visitors Bureau chief, apparently sent emails to tourist operators warning them of the pending disaster.

The interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, warned those spreading the rumours, saying they caused unnecessary fear among school children and the general population.
