The chairman of the Solomon Islands electoral commission, Sir Peter Kenilorea, says spending during the election campaign relies to a great extent on the honesty of the candidates.
Solomon Islands will go to the polls on August the 4th to elect a new 50-member parliament for a four-year term.
As the date has been officially announced, candidates have two weeks to register.
Sir Peter says it's difficult to determine if they overspend in trying to woo voters.
"We've been taking their words in the past and it's very difficult to challenge their word for it because we don't have any system at the moment of checks and balances."
