The New Zealand Government says it is supportive of maintaining the lines of communication with Fiji's interim regime.
The Tongan Prime Minister, Dr Feleti Sevele, is in Fiji for talks with the interim Prime Minster and has met the interim foreign minister, Ratu Inoke Kububola this morning.
Dr Sevele is the chairman of the Forum Ministerial Contact Group, which when it meet in Auckland in the last month, said Fiji's situation had deteriorated over the last year.
That assessment angered Fiji's interim Prime Minister, who said the group would not be welcome to visit to check out the situation for itself.
A spokesperson for New Zealand's foreign minister says New Zealand is supportive of attempts to keep lines of communication open, if other Pacific countries choose to do that.
A spokesperson for the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat declined to comment but says Dr Sevele is on an official visit as the chair of the Contact Group.
