Fiji regime says media decree aids economy and human rights

Fiji's Permanent Secretary for Information, Sharon Smith Johns, has dismissed Australian criticism of the new Media Decree, saying it is most unfair.

This comes after the Australian foreign minister and News Limited spoke out against a provision aimed at reducing foreign ownership of the Fiji Times to 10 percent.

But Ms Smith-Johns says the decree is huge step forward for the media industry in Fiji and for the first time, Fiji has legislation that is all encompassing and empowers the people of Fiji in ensuring that their views are heard.

She also says the new decree will have a positive impact on the economy, human rights, good governance and access to accurate information.
