French Polynesia's pro-independence leader, Oscar Temaru, will attend this month's expanded Melanesian Spearhead Group meeting in Fiji ahead of the Pacific Islands Forum summit in Vanuatu.
Mr Temaru of the Tavini Huiraatira Party wants to lobby the MSG to support his bid to have French Polynesia re-inscribed on the UN list of territories to be decolonised.
The Forum has repeatedly refused to back any moves to decolonise French Polynesia while it has supported the process in New Caledonia.
Tea Hirshon of the Tavini Party says France has been applying pressure on Pacific countries to ignore Tahiti's right to self-determination.
"We don't consider that Fiji will be a country that will support us necessarily. We are going with a lot of humility trying to show the people of the Pacific that even though we have a high standard of living, we are actually at the end of this system which has created an artificial economy and we are in deep problems now."
