CNMI invokes emergency to avoid nursing crisis

4:32 pm on 7 July 2010

The nursing crisis on Rota and Tinian has prompted the Governor of the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas, Benigno Fitial, to declare a state of emergency.

The move follows the termination of contracts between the Saipan Employment Agency and Services and the Rota and Tinian health centers.

The Agency had violated labour laws and the governor stepped in.

By declaring an emergency, the administration has been able to use the service of the 22 Filipino nurses at the Rota and Tinian Health Centers.

Governor Fitial said the state of emergency was to avoid the disruption of critical medical services.
