The Solomon Islands Government and Motech Industries Inc of Taiwan yesterday signed a multi-million dollar solar electrification project with a Taiwanese company.

Motech Industries has been engaged to provide solar equipment and the Solomon Islands government has given 100 percent exemption on import duty and GST for all imported renewable energy equipment.

The government of Taiwan has provided $1.2 million US dollars in funds towards electrification of rural boarding and community high schools through the use of solar energy technology.

The Solomon Star newspaper says the aim is to improve education services in rural schools as the non existence of electricity access and the high cost of fuel has placed such schools at a disadvantage for years.
