Vanuatu's Ministry of Education has bought new books as part of a nationwide project for primary schools.
Thousands of books - in both English and French - are to be sent to schools as part of the Vanuatu Literacy Enrichment Programme.
The government-funded project is supported by NZAID, AUSAID and UNICEF.
The ministry's curriculum officer, Leisel Masingiow, says they want to extend the programme given its initial success in getting children interested in reading and writing.
"We have now purchased the books and we're hoping that in the future we will be able to complete the whole year levels and also up to the secondary schools."
Leisel Masingiow is in New Zealand, training with one of the book suppliers, Learning Media.
