Nauru speaker removed as deadlock continues

The caretaker president of Nauru, Marcus Stephen, says he has removed the speaker from office, a week after he had been chosen.

Aloysius Amwano was dismissed after refusing any motion to be put.

He demanded apologies from two members who Mr Amwano claimed had shown disrespect for his position during media interviews earlier this week.

Mr Stephen invoked his powers by stating that the Speaker was contravening the constitution and the Standing Orders with impunity.

Mr Amwano was the third speaker the parliament has chosen in less than two months.

Nauru has gone to the polls twice since April but the elections failed to end the deadlock in the 18-strong assembly.
