Nauru parliament sits briefly again amid Speaker void

12:48 pm on 9 July 2010

Nauru's parliament sat briefly this morning, with the former Speaker and all members of the opposition boycotting the sitting.

Before adjourning the House until next Tuesday, the Deputy Speaker Landon Deireragea read a statement confirming he had assumed the position of chair of parliament following the removal of the Speaker yesterday.

Nauru's caretaker president, Marcus Stephen, decided to dismiss the speaker Aloysius Amwano from office, a week after he had been chosen, for refusing any motion to be tabled.

Mr Amwano was the third speaker the parliament had chosen in less than two months.

Mr Deireragea described the situation as a sad chapter in Nauru's parliamentary history, and one he hopes won't be repeated.
