Australia's acting high commissioner to Fiji told to leave by interim regime

6:53 am on 13 July 2010

The Australian government says its acting high commissioner to Fiji will be forced to leave today.

It says Sarah Roberts has been told by Fiji's Ministry for Foreign Affairs that she will be issued with a formal notice to leave the country.

Australia's Foreign Minister, Stephen Smith, says the decision is both unjustified and disappointing, but Australia will not retaliate.

He has been a vocal critic of Fiji's military regime led by Commodore Frank Bainimarama.

Last month, Mr Smith attacked the Fiji government's decision to limit foreign media ownership in the country to 10 percent.

Both New Zealand and Australia had senior diplomats expelled from Fiji last year and expelled Fiji's diplomats in return.
