The Northern Marianas Government has joined nine US states in filing a legal brief supporting Arizona's controversial immigration law.
The law requires immigrants to carry their alien registration documents at all times and allows police to question the residency status of people in the course of enforcing other laws.
The Obama administration's lawsuit in the Phoenix federal court asserts that the law, which is due to take effect in a fortnight, usurps the Federal Government's authority to regulate immigration.
The CNMI governor's media spokesperson, Angel Demapan, confirmed they've approved the brief which was filed by Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox.
In the brief, Mr Cox argues that, like Arizona, other states have the power to enforce federal immigration law, provided the states do not create new categories of aliens or attempt to independently determine the immigration status of an alien.
