Fiji leader claims Engaging the Pacific meeting a major step forward

Fiji's interim Prime Minister says the country took its first steps forward at last week's meeting of Pacific leaders.

Leaders and representatives from ten Pacific Island countries attended the "Engaging the Pacific" meeting, organised in place of the cancelled Melanesian Spearhead Group meeting.

FBC News reports Commodore Frank Bainimarama as saying the first step to Fiji's way forward has been accomplished and there will be no turning back.

He says the leaders and representatives of Pacific countries have welcomed Fiji's Strategic Framework for Change.

He says island leaders are supporting the steps Fiji is taking to become a truly democratic nation.

Commodore Bainimarama says Fiji will not be hindered or side-tracked by pressure from Australia and New Zealand.
