Tonga targets counterfeit goods in operation Bullet

Tonga's Customs and Trade Division of the Ministry for Revenue Services have been targetting high risk sea freight consignments to Tonga in a surveillance operation.

The Minister for Revenue says operation "Bullet" aims to detect counterfeit and under-valued or misdescribed goods along with other breaches of Customs legislation.

Sione Teisina Fuko says since its commencement customs staff have seized over 300 thousand US dollars worth of goods, in addition to counterfeit cosmetics, DVDs, and sporting equipment.

He says the operation being supported by technical advisers from New Zealand and Australia.

The Minister has also advised importers to ensure only documents that accurately portray the value and contents of their consignments be lodged with Customs.

The operation has been operating since June of this year.
