Struggling Fiji sugar mill may be shut down

The Fiji Sugar Corporation may be forced to close down the Rarawai Sugar Mill in Ba as crushing is still at a standstill.

Fiji Broadcasting reports that hundreds of cane growers and truck drivers met with Corporation executives yesterday afternoon to try and resolve issues regarding the mill's performance.

The mill stopped crushing three weeks into the crushing season due to a problem with the boiler.

The FSC chief executive, Deo Saran, says a real problem exists and they had considered shutting down the mill.

He says another option is to repair the mill and that will take time.

The corporation had earlier said the boiler couldn't generate enough steam for factory performance.
