Leading lawyer says Fiji High Court ruling gives hope to political targets

President of the Fiji Law Society Dorsami Naidu says a recent High Court ruling gives hope to many other defendants who may be targeted for political reasons.

Justice Priyantha Fernando has cleared prominent human rights lawyer Imrana Jalal of all charges relating to operating a restaurant without a licence.

Her husband Ratu Sakiusa Tuisolia, was also cleared of seven charges on Friday, but one final charge against him remains.

"I had thought they were making a mountain out of a molehill when they charged Imrana and Tuisolia and what's transpired so far gives us faith that one can go the courts and accept some justice."

Mr Naidu says the state should not have wasted resources by taking essentially municipal administrative dealings to the High Court.
