New Zealand is providing an additional three and a half million US dollars to support the management and policing of the Pacific's fisheries.

The New Zealand Prime Minister, John Key, says the Pacific's fisheries are the cornerstone of the region's economy.

He has announced during the Pacific Islands Forum summit in Vanuatu that it's in the best interests of all Pacific nations to pool their efforts.

The new funding will support the management and delivery of sub-regional and national observer programmes.

Mr Key says these initiatives will enhance fisheries monitoring and surveillance and create up to 250 skilled jobs.
