Disgruntled former staff of Air Vanuatu hold up plane in protest

3:16 pm on 10 August 2010

Former staff of Air Vanuatu on the island of Tanna in the south of Vanuatu delayed the departure of an aircraft earlier today in a protest action.

Report from Tanna says that the former staff were not happy their jobs were cut as part of a re-structuring in the wake of the company's dire financial situation.

Our correspondent says the former workers have told the management that it should've shown respect for their contribution to the development of the airline on Tanna and thanked them for their service.

The airline's management is expected later today to make a statement but it has told local media that the former employees hadn't informed the main office in Port Vila of their concerns.
