Chinese consider involvement in Niue's Matavai expansion

Chinese officials have expressed an interest in expanding the Matavai Resort, the only hotel on Niue.

Chinese representatives are in discussions with the Niue Government, with plans to inject funds into developing the island's tourism sector.

The idea fits with the Government's plans for additional accommodation as outlined in the Hall Report, which was commissioned by New Zealand with a view to boosting visitor numbers.

The Matavai manager, Hima Douglas, says the options also include new accommodation units in the villages.

"My understanding is that the Chinese officials are on the island talking to the Niue Government and looking at the various options and fine tuning what they're able to assist with. And as far as I know, nothing has been set in concrete just yet."

Hima Douglas says the Matavai board would prefer to invest its own resources in the expansion.
