Hopes in American Samoa cannery will re-open with new owner

Details of an agreement said to have been reached over American Samoa's Chicken of the Sea Samoa Packing cannery have still not been released.

Reports in the local media nearly two weeks ago quoted a government source saying Tri Marine International plans to purchasing the remaining Samoa Packing fixed assets at a price of less than 5 million US dollars.

There are high hopes the plant will re-open and that it will inject new life into the territory's economy.

The local director of Catholic Social Services, Cecelia Solofa, says many people are only trained to work in the cannery and will now be pinning their hopes on the possibility of new jobs:

"At least a lot of them have the experience in doing kind of work in canneries they are accustomed to in the canneries, because that makes it very difficult for them to find employment elsewhere now that the cannery has closed and some are being laid off at the second cannery as of this month."
