New Pacific media group to fill PINA's accountability lapses

1:41 pm on 12 August 2010

The newly-formed Pacific Media Organisation says it will fill the gap, left by what it calls, the accountability lapses of the Pacific Islands News Association, or PINA.

Journalists from around the Pacific met in Samoa this morning to write the constitution of the Organisation.

Its spokesman Savea Sano Malifa, the editor in chief of the Samoa Observer newspaper, says PINA is not doing what it was set up to do.

"For a start we would have made a strong opposition, a strong protest against the regime in Fiji for issuing the decrees that are depriving journalists in Fiji of the freedom to work. We would have been opposed to the decrees made against newspaper, radio and television owners."

Savea Sano Malifa says the group has already received a lot of support from overseas.
