Digicel development in Vanuatu halted by protest

The Suru Council of Chiefs in the centre of Vanuatu's Pentecost Island has decided to stop the work done by the telecommunication company, Digicel, on their Langare historical site.

A Vanuatu Cultural Centre worker, Bruce Tabi, says the chiefs decided to stop the construction of the tower until a meeting is held on the island with Digicel, the chiefs, the land owners and the cultural centre.

This follows complaints from the chiefs that Digicel, which has already laid the tower's foundations, has violated Vanuatu's law on the protection of the historical site.
