American Samoa to consider whale watch tourism

6:28 pm on 19 August 2010

A wildlife biologist with the American Samoan Government says there's potential for the territory to set up a whale watch venture but more scientific information is needed first.

Whale watching is growing as a tourist attraction in places like Fiji, Tonga and Niue and the Department of Marine and Wildlife Resources' Alden Tagarino, says it also has promise in American Samoa.

He says the Department is conducting surveys and once they're completed he'll write a proposal for whale watching as a tourist activity.

With the downsizing of the tuna industry the territory is looking at other economic activities, such as tourism.
