Tight security planned for PM election in Solomons

5:46 am on 23 August 2010

The Head of Police in Solomons Islands says security will be a very high priority before and after this week's prime ministerial vote.

The 50 MPs elected two and half weeks ago are to meet for the first time on Wednesday to choose a new national leader.

The two contenders for Prime Minister are Danny Philip and Steve Abana.

Solomon Island's Broadcasting says public access to the public grounds of the Parliament House will be closed during the Prime Ministerial elections.

Police Commissioner, Peter Marshall, says there will be a considerable presence of officers from the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force and they will be supported by RAMSI police and military officers.

The Police Commissioner also called on public understanding for the planned police operations during the elections for Prime Minister.
