Emergency declaration on CNMI utility enters second year

11:30 am on 24 August 2010

The governor of the Northern Marianas, Benigno Fitial, has extended the state of emergency declaration for the Commonwealth Utilities Corporation.

The governor cited a decision by the U.S. District Court that sets new deadlines for the CUC to comply with federal environmental laws.

This month marks the start of the second year of the state of emergency imposed on the Corporation by Governor Fitial.

This means procurement regulations for the CUC remain suspended, so that it can cope with emergency needs.
