Efforts in Fiji to eliminate typhoid one water filter at a time

The Fiji Water Foundation and the NGO Give Clean Water are donating filters to the poorest villages in the Ba area in an effort to eliminate water borne diseases including typhoid.

Volunteers from both organisations teamed up at the end of last month to install 126 water filters in Votua Village, one of many communities devastated by the January 2009 floods.

The Fiji Water Foundation says in particular, the village suffers from frequent water shortages and during times of water supply disruption, residents rely on rain and river water, resulting in high levels of water-borne disease.

The Foundation says the device removes 99.99 percent of all bacteria and protozoa from virtually any dirty water source and can produce five gallons of clean drinking water in 15 minutes.
