CNMI students protests against scholarship denial

10:03 am on 4 September 2010

Several students in the Northern Marianas are crying foul over the decision of the Saipan Higher Educational Financial Assistance not to approve their scholarship applications.

Officials say the students have been turned down because their parents are not U.S. citizens.

This is despite the students themselves having U.S. citizenship and having achieved the requisite grade point average at local schools to meet all the requirements of the scholarship programme.

The mayor of Saipan, Donald Flores, says there appear to be signs of bias in the selection process and he'll look into the matter to rectify the problem.
