American Samoa to mark tsunami anniversary with public holiday

12:38 pm on 6 September 2010

American Samoa's Governor, Togiola Tulafono, plans to declare September the 29th a holiday to mark the one-year anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami that claimed the lives of 32 people in the territory.

Togiola says a committee has been established to put together a memorial programme for the anniversary in coordination with the National Council of Churches in American Samoa.

It's proposed that at 6:48a.m., the recorded time of when the earthquake occurred last September, bells will chime simultaneously territory-wide.
