1:11 pm on 6 September 2010

Police in Fiji are looking for thieves who stole more than half a million US dollars destined for the Fiji Reserve Bank.

The money, all fresh notes, was taken from a container which arrived from Britain late on Friday.

It is understood that a special vault was in the container, and the vault was securing 20 Fiji dollar notes.

A police spokesman, Inspector Atunaisa Sokomuri, says investigations are under way to try and recover the money.

"Money was removed from a container at the wharf, money destined for the Reserve Bank of Fiji. It was later checked by officials. It was discovered money was missing. At the moment a special taskforce has been formed by our criminal investigation department, and they are investigating."
