The Fiji police say the theft of half a million US dollars in brand new Fiji 20 dollar notes had happened before the container carrying them arrived in Fiji.

The holed container was found on the wharf in Suva on Sunday.

The money was destined for the Reserve Bank in Fiji.

The police say they are working closely with their overseas counterparts to try and solve the mystery surrounding the theft.

The Fiji Village website reports no more details will be released at this stage as it may hinder the investigation.
