Samoa's Commonwealth Games rugby sevens hopes have been dealth a blow.
Champion playmaker Uale Mai has this week quit the team's training camp to take up an overseas contract in Japan.
Coach Stephen Betham says Mai's departure is a big loss in terms of experience.
He says Mai told him he was in negotiations but he assumed Mai would wait until after the Commonwealth Games before leaving.
Alatasi Tupou or Paul Chan Tung are now likely to step into Mai's shoes.
