9:01 am on 10 September 2010

The United Nations opened a combined office in Nauru yesterday.

The Joint Presence Office brings together the United Nations Development Programme, United Nations Population Fund and the United Nations Children's Fund or UNICEF.

Nauru's President, Marcus Stephens, says the establishment of a UN Office will allow for a much stronger and a more positive relationship with greater cooperation and better coordination.

The greater presence comes after extensive consultations dating back four years.

The UN Resident Coordinator, Knut Ostby, says it's a unique collaboration to help achieve national development priorities and meet the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.
