The Office of the High Commissioner For Human Rights has expressed concern about human rights abuses in the Pacific.
In a statement, its special rapporteur Margaret Sekaggya, said she was concerned about reports of stigmatisation, threats and attacks against human rights defenders in the region.
She mentioned no country but said it was of utmost importance that human rights defenders be able to operate in a safe environment conducive to their legitimate activities.
The comment follows a meeting by regional delegates highlighting the specific challenges Pacific human rights defenders face.
The meeting reportedly tried to identify practical ways for civil society to use local and international mechanisms for raising human rights issues.
