Spending limits for election candidates in Solomons likely to increase

3:10 pm on 14 September 2010

The Solomon Islands chief electoral officer, Polycarp Haununu, says campaign spending limits appear unrealistic and are likely to be increased before the next election.

The current spending limit is just below 6,400 US dollars.

Candidates must supply their electoral officers with evidence they stayed within the limit during their campaigning.

But in past elections, the electoral commission has had problems with candidates not disclosing the amount they have spent.

Mr Haununu says there should be a change.

"The current limit seems to be not realistic. For a candidate to do his or her election campaign it involves a lot of expenses, like travelling."
