Fiji's Motibhai buys Fiji Times

5:44 pm on 15 September 2010

Australia's News Limited has sold the Fiji Times newspaper for an undisclosed sum to the Fiji company Motibhai.

Thsi follows a decree by the Fiji interim regime that forced Fiji-based media outlets to be transferred into 90 percent local ownership.

The chief executive of New Limited, John Hartigan, says he is delighted to have been able to find a buyer who will take over the business as a going concern.

Mr Hartigan says his company has been a reluctant seller of Fiji's oldest newspaper.

The deal comes less than two weeks before the expiry of the deadline set by the interim regime.

Among those interested in the Times was the Fiji Sun newspaper.
