Papua New Guinea has given the government of American Samoa 726,000 US dollars to assist the territory in its recovery efforts following last September's earthquake and tsunami.

The donation was made by Lieutenant Colonel Michael Kumun, who is the Defence Adviser at the PNG High Commission in New Zealand on behalf of PNG Prime Minister, Sir Michael Somare, and the people of PNG.

The donation was accepted by the acting governor Faoa Aitofele Sunia in a brief ceremony in Pago Pago.

Lt Colonel Kumun says Papua New Guinea has a special place in their hearts for American Samoa and Samoa because of the huge contribution of the Samoan missionaries in the past.
