Motion to impeach Tonga Supreme Court judge unlikely to be heard soon

7:47 pm on 22 September 2010

Two of Tonga's pro-democracy MPs believe their parliamentary motion to impeach Supreme Court judge, Robert Shuster, will come to nothing now it has been referred to the Law Committee.

'Akilisi Pohiva and 'Isileli Pulu had been pushing for the impeachment, claiming Judge Shuster is incompetent.

The motion was read in Parliament this week, but the Government says there's not enough time to debate it, given the bills that need to be passed before the end of the session next week.

Our correspondent, Mateni Tapueluelu, says the Government has criticised the impeachment attempt, saying that with democratic reform at hand, what they characterise as a witchhunt is inappropriate.

They believe it does not coincide with the spirit of reform - that is their main argument, but the People's Representatives argue the judiciary is one important sector of the Government of Tonga and it has to be impartial and therefore this issue has to be addressed in Parliament so that the people are satisfied they can trust the judiciary.
