Hawaii's East-West Center has been given funding by the US Government to serve as the Pacific's lead institution for a programme designed to help island and coastal communities cope with the effects of climate change.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has given just under four million US dollars to the Pacific Regional Integrated Science and Assessment program.
It is one of 11 regional programs supported by the federal government across the U.S.
The region covered by the Pacific program includes Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Marianas, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Marshall Islands and Palau.
