Vanuatu soccer women looking to future

4:01 pm on 29 September 2010

Building for the future is the theme Vanuatu footballers are taking into the Oceania Women's Nations Cup tournament, which begins in Auckland today.

Head coach Richard Iwai has barely had two weeks to get to know his players and says it's unrealistic to think his side can challenge New Zealand in today's opening fixture.

Iwai says instead he's thinking long-term and wants to use the next fortnight to start shaping a side that can be competitive in at the South Pacific Games in New Caledonia late next year.

"Our target is for the next year because, this tournament, I just coached the team for only two weeks - two weeks, for me, is too short to prepare a good team. If I coach the team for the South Pacific Games that is my target is to come and see how New Zealand are playing - show the girls how they're playing - and I know who is good, who is ready for the games - for the next tournament."

Wednesday's other fixture will see the Cook Islands clash with Tahiti.
