The French overseas territories minister, Marie-Luce Penchard, has deferred her planned visit to French Polynesia by a week.

She was due in Tahiti next week but Paris now says she will be visiting a week later.

Mrs Penchard is to continue her discussions with political leaders on plans to change French Polynesia's electoral system for the third time since early 2007 as part of France's bid to end the territory's political instability.

A first round of talks on the matter was held in Paris in early September.

The reforms emanating from the consultations are expected to be submitted to the French legislature in March.

Despite repeated calls for early elections, Paris has hinted that there are no plans for France to call territorial elections before 2013.
