Reports from New Caledonia say a woman who died two months ago was the first person to have contracted legionnaire's disease in the territory.

The Nouvelles Caledoniennes says the woman had suffered from leukemia but during her stay in hospital, she was also diagnosed with legionnaire's disease.

The paper says it has now been established that the germ causing the illness was found in a garden hose at her home.

The hospital says this doesn't amount to a formal proof but it is highly probable that she contracted it there.
